Background of the Study
Cancer diagnosis and treatment often cause significant psychological, emotional, and physical distress, requiring patients to develop effective coping mechanisms to manage the challenges associated with survivorship. Coping mechanisms, which include emotional support, lifestyle adjustments, and psychological resilience, play a crucial role in determining the quality of life of cancer survivors (World Health Organization, 2024). Oncology nurses are at the forefront of providing interventions that support survivors, including counseling, symptom management, and health education, which help them transition from active treatment to survivorship (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
In Nigeria, cancer survivorship remains a growing concern due to late-stage diagnoses, limited access to treatment, and inadequate post-treatment support services (Bello et al., 2023). Many cancer survivors struggle with anxiety, depression, and social reintegration, which may hinder their ability to cope effectively. In Sokoto State, where healthcare infrastructure is still developing, the role of oncology nurses in supporting cancer survivors is vital in ensuring better physical and psychological well-being (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
Despite the recognized importance of oncology nursing interventions, little research has been conducted on their impact on the coping mechanisms of cancer survivors in Sokoto State. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of oncology nursing interventions in helping survivors manage post-treatment challenges and improve their overall well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Cancer survivorship is associated with numerous challenges, including emotional distress, fear of recurrence, financial strain, and difficulties in returning to normal life. Effective coping mechanisms are essential in helping survivors navigate these challenges, yet many lack adequate support, particularly in resource-limited settings like Sokoto State (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
Oncology nurses play a significant role in providing post-treatment interventions, such as psychological support, self-care education, and lifestyle modification guidance. However, limited data exist on how these interventions impact the coping abilities of cancer survivors in Sokoto State. Without a clear understanding of the effectiveness of oncology nursing support, there is a risk that cancer survivors may be left without adequate assistance, leading to poor health outcomes and reduced quality of life.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of oncology nursing interventions on the coping mechanisms of cancer survivors in Sokoto State.
2. To assess the psychological, social, and physical challenges faced by cancer survivors.
3. To identify barriers to effective oncology nursing interventions in cancer survivorship care.
Research Questions
1. How do oncology nursing interventions influence the coping mechanisms of cancer survivors in Sokoto State?
2. What are the key psychological, social, and physical challenges faced by cancer survivors?
3. What are the barriers to effective oncology nursing support for cancer survivors?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nursing interventions significantly improve the coping mechanisms of cancer survivors.
2. Psychological, social, and financial challenges negatively impact the well-being of cancer survivors.
3. Enhancing oncology nursing interventions will lead to better post-treatment coping strategies among cancer survivors.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on cancer survivors in Sokoto State who have received oncology nursing support post-treatment. Limitations may include variations in the level of nursing care across different hospitals and potential difficulty in obtaining long-term survivor data.
